Honest Owlet Review

 photo owlet_zpshofwh10i.jpg
I know so many of you have been asking for this review, but I really wanted to wait until I had used the owlet baby monitor for a good amount of time so I could give it an honest review.

The owlet baby monitor is a relatively new baby product that has taken the market by storm. Years ago when they were in the development stages my husband was in a business competition with them. He came home and told me they had lost to the "baby sock people" and I wanted to know more. He explained to me it was a sock you put on your baby while they slept. And that it had a sensor in it that is designed to alert you if your baby's heart rate or oxygen levels got too low.  I was so intrigued and said that if it was on the market when I had a baby I would pay for it no matter how much it cost.

Well it's on the market and all in all I think everyone needs it!

The Owlet is a baby monitor that uses pulse oximetry to get your baby's heart rate and oxygen levels in real time. It has a base station that sits next to your baby's crib that gets the signal from the sock via Bluetooth. Your smartphone can connect to the base station so that you can check your baby's levels any time on your phone and it is designed to alert your phone if an alarm goes off. There are 3 different notification. The blue alert means that the baby sock is out of Bluetooth range from the base and is no longer getting readings. The yellow alert means that the sock cannot get a reading- either it is put on incorrectly or the baby kicked it off. The red alert is designed to notify you if the baby's oxygen levels have gone below 80% or that the baby's heartrate is too low (60 BPM) or too high (220 BPM), outside of the present zones.

Here is more information about how it works.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY

1. Owlet care baby monitors are expensive, but for the technology (pulse oximetry- the same as used on your finger in the hospital) and the quality, I think it is a STEAL. I think that piece of mind is worth more than any price tag. The owlet costs $250 or you can pay monthly payments.

2. It will probably throw a few false alarms while you are learning how to put the sock on properly and scare you. It is better to be prepared for these! There is a learning curve to putting on the sock properly so it gets an accurate reading.  Here are my tips to getting an accurate reading and have less alarms.

- Make sure the sensor is on the bottom of the foot for the newborn size sock and that you are using the right size sock. If you just started using a bigger size sock and it is throwing an alert try putting the smaller size back on and see if it fixes the problem

- Have your baby wear footie PJ's. When Lila is wearing footie PJ's it NEVER throws a yellow alert, but when she isn't it happens all the time because she's strong and kicks it right off no matter how tightly I put on the sock.

3. Don't automatically freak out when an alarm goes off. The owlet is there to alert you and is extra sensitive. Look at your baby, do they look ok? Does breathing seem easy? Are they a good color? I freaked out one night when the alarm went off after I had moved up a sock size and immediately thought I needed to take Lila to the ER but Scott calmed me down and said look at her. She looks fine, she is breathing fine, lets check first that everything is on correctly. We switched her to a smaller sock size and all her readings came back normal.

4. You will sleep SO well! I seriously trust my owlet so much. Because it is so sensitive I know that if anything were to be slightly off it would wake me up. I check her stats before I go to sleep and sometimes if I wake up in the night and wonder how she's doing (its SO nice I can stay in bed and don't have to walk down the hall to her room just to check that her chest is going up and down!) I seriously sleep so soundly!!

5. The stats are more helpful than I thought they would be! The owlet app shows if your baby is wiggling and educates you about how their heart rate changes based on what your baby is doing. I've learned that when Lila's heart rate is above 150 she is usually awake and if its above 120 shes asleep but not in a deep sleep and if its below 120 she's in a deep sleep. Most nights I wait until she's in a deep sleep to go to bed myself. That way I don't have to wake up 3 times in an hour to go put her binky in or something else. It's actually super helpful and I find it interesting.

6. The owlet is so helpful when your baby is sick! I have had multiple friends who knew when to go to the hospital for RSV because their babies oxygen levels were too low. It helped them receive the care their babies needed as soon as possible which helps them recover quicker and get the care they need. (*Please note, the Owlet is not a diagnostic tool or a medical device.)

7. The owlet team has great customer service! They have people you can chat with anytime if you have any concerns. There is also a chat with a doctor feature within the app.

8. When your baby is a newborn the sock might cause pressure marks on their feet since their skin is so sensitive, but it doesn't hurt your baby and goes away within a day. Switch the sock between both feet to keep this from happening, but it looks the same the marks a baby girl would get on her head from a tight headband.

9. It is the best baby product I own and I would recommend it to anyone. I seriously love everything about it. After the first two weeks I never have any alarms go off unless Lila kicks the sock off.

I hope I covered everything!

When I first started my blog I blogged about fashion all the time! I have always loved fashion, beauty, shopping etc. It's something I really enjoy and would consider one of my creative outlets. When we started into our more intense infertility treatments I kind of blew up like a balloon. I gained some weight and had a lot of bloating no matter how healthy I ate or how much I worked out. Fashion and clothes became less appealing to me (in all honestly a lot of things did - that's depression for you). Ever since having Lila my love for clothes and fashion has really sparked again. I'm thinking I am going to start blogging some of my outfits again! So here's to the different stages of life and the one that I'm in!

My Outfit
Crisscross Sweater (comes in so many fun colors and is 50% off!)
Over the Knee Boots - sold out :( But almost exactly the same here and here (on sale too!) and
Jeans - I seriously wear these everyday!

Lila's Outfit
Black Moccs - Freshly Picked Moccs are the best purchase you will ever make!
Pants
Onesie
Headband

Thanks for following along in all the different phases of our lives!

My Must Have Baby Items!

I really wanted to wait to do this post so I could tell you what I really use everyday with Lila. I bought so many baby items and these are the ones I use everyday.
(You can just click on each item above. They're linked to the best price I could find. Most of them are on sale!)

1. The Rock n' Play. Ok this thing is a MUST for new moms! Lila still takes her naps in it everyday. It has the perfect angle (especially for newborns who often have reflux) and it vibrates and rocks. I think babies feel like they're being held or something, but I could not live without this!

2. The DockATot. THIS IS MY #1 BABY ITEM! I did not really understand the hype when I bought it and my husband thought I was crazy. But after we came home from the hospital Lila would wake up EVERY TIME we put her down. Then we put her in the DockATot and she slept like a champ through anything! I really really REALLY recommend getting it before your baby arrives because I think starting her out in this might be the reason she is such a good sleeper. It created the habit of good sleeping right away. I am going to have to get the bigger size soon!

3. The Owlet Baby Monitor. This comes in a close second place! I LOVE my owlet! I'm working on a full review that should be up later this week! I wanted to use it for a few months before reviewing so I could give a real and honest review. All in all, the owlet gives me so much piece of mind. I would seriously never sleep. I would be checking to see if she was breathing alllllll the time. But with the owlet I can just check my phone to calm my nerves.

4. VTech Baby Monitor. I have had a few friends buy the expensive video monitors only to have them hacked and someone watch and talk to their baby! It freaked me out SO bad. This monitor is just audio but is SO great. I can talk to Lila through it and calm her down and it has a great range in our house. It isn't noisy and only picks up Lila's sounds. It also has a light display of noise so when we're watching a movie I can turn the sound off and just have it sitting in front of us and the light will pulse if she is making noise. I really love it!

5. Kickee Pants Pajamas. I wish I wouldn't have bought any other pajamas for Lila. I only ever use these! They are softer than butter and super stretchy so they fit forever. Lila still fits in her 0-3 month sizes even though she's a chunk and wears 6-12 month clothes. In the future they are the only pjs I will buy! They also have amazing swaddle blankets made of the same fabric. If Lila liked being swaddled I am sure it would have been my favorite. On top of being the comfiest thing ever, they come in THE cutest prints (I just love all the ruffles too!) -There are non-ruffled ones for the boys.

6. Baby Bjorn Bouncer This thing is AMAZING! I went down to New Mexico to visit my family and my mom's friend let me borrow this for my stay. It didn't look like much, but Lila was hooked and so was I! So I got one while I was away so that it would be home when I got back (I couldn't live without it). It is super light weight so it's easy to move around the house. It must be so comfy because Lila will stay in this longer than she will stay in any other position. It has different levels of reclining and upright. Lila often falls asleep in it because she is just so content. It also comes in a variety of colors to match your house (silly I know, but I appreciate that since my home is now overrun by baby items)

7. Bouncer Toy Attachment If you get the bouncer this is a MUST. It one of the reasons Lila loves it so much. The little spinning toys occupy her for hours. Its really easy to clip on and off of the bouncer, but honestly I don't think I've ever used the bouncer without it.

8. Play Gym I got this as a baby shower gift and I had no idea I would use it literally everyday. Even when Lila was new and little I would set her under all the toys and her eyes would light up. There are lights and noises as well (beware the songs will be stuck in your head for the rest of your life haha). Lila has loved this in every new stage. I loved watching when she first tried to hit the toys and now she grabs them all and pulls them. I hang new and different toys from it every once in a while so that she is always entertained.

9. Ergo Baby 360 I also received this as a baby shower gift and it is definitely a must. I am all about baby wearing to get things done. For the newborn stage I definitely used my wrap when she was in the newborn stage, but pretty quickly she didn't want to be tied down and loved looking around. I love that the ergo 360 lets you carry them front facing safely (I worked with a lot of physical therapists that told my how important it was to use ergonomically safe baby wearers so you don't mess with your baby's physical development). This is the best for baby wearing for long periods of time. Like going on a hike, to a football game or deep cleaning the house. For shorter periods of time I recommend a sling! I love mine from My Wild Bird.

10. Puj Infant Tub We used this newborn tub every day when Lila first came home. She loves tubs and it totally calms her down. The Puj tub is so soft, really portable and easy to store, but still really supportive for your baby. It was so easy to slip right into our kitchen sink for bath time. I was really sad when she outgrew it! (We now use this bathtub and it's been great. I love how affordable it is and it does the job well.) We also received a puj bathtowel as a gift and it's so nice. It hooks around your neck so that when you bend over to pick up your baby the towel stays in place. I am also going to order these super cute tub grippy spots to put in the bottom of our tub once Lila isn't in a baby tub anymore.

11. Baby Bling Bows This is for the girl mommas out there. I am obsessed with these baby bows. I mean I love all baby bows, but these are my favorite. The wide nylon band is so comfy for Lila and never leaves a mark on her head. They have such a wide selection of colors and styles (I'm sure you've seen my obsession with the fur pom ones and love the cable knit ones too), they're easy to wash and I'm all about how big the bow is!

Ok. Those are my most used and loved baby items! Below are my honorable mentions :)

Our Sleep Routine

 photo IMG_6500_zps1ycr4fl8.jpg
I mentioned on Instagram that our little Lila is an awesome sleeper and I had SO many questions in return about what I did for sleep training. So today I thought I'd share a little bit about what I have done, what products I use and what books I have read to get us here.

Let me be clear that this is just what worked for Lila, I really think that different things work for different babies!

So, to start off, when Lila was two weeks old I felt this pressure to get her on a sleep schedule. I was so worried that if I didn't that she would never sleep or be a really bad sleeper. I read a bunch of baby sleep training books and tried to implement a really strict schedule (never let her fall asleep in my arms, rigid times and crazy routines). Lets just say that was miserable! She slept less and so did I. That's when I decided to use all that I had learned in my readings and just experiment! I used things that worked and discarded the things that didn't.

Sleep equals more sleep. From all of my reading I learned that trying to keep your baby up late so that they're sleep better does not work! The more your baby sleeps the more they want to sleep. And that has really been true for Lila!

Babies want to be on a schedule. I spent a few weeks mainly being at home and trying to listen to my baby. I found out her cues for being tired and being hungry. And pretty quickly she established her own schedule. The only thing that I did, was encourage the EAT, PLAY, SLEEP routine. This means that I just don't let her fall asleep right after eating and it seems to really make a difference. To do this, I usually burp her after she eats which often wakes her up a bit and then change her diaper (that really wakes her up). Rarely she will stay asleep through all of that, and that's ok. I just take that as a sign that her body really needs to sleep and let her ;) Flexibility is key with babies!

This is what a typical day looks like for Lila.

Awake at 7 am- Feeding
7:15- 8 am Play
8-9 am Nap
9-10 am Play

10 am Feeding
10:15-11 am Play
11-12 pm Nap
12-1 Play

1 pm Feeding
1:15-2 pm Play
2-3:30 pm Nap
3:30-4 pm Play

4 pm Feeding
4:15-5 pm Play
5-5:30 pm Nap
5:30 - 7 pm Play

7 pm Feeding
7:15- 7:45 pm Play
7:45 - 9:30 Sleep

9:30 pm Feeding
9:45- 10:30 Play
10:30- somewhere between 5-6 am Sleep

5-6 am Feeding
After feeding until 7 am  Sleep

Obviously it's a little different everyday. Some mornings she wakes up earlier and sometimes her naps are longer or shorter, However, she pretty much always eats every 3 hours with playing then a nap then more playing in between.

So... I let my baby sleep in my arms! It's not every time she sleeps which I think is important, but probably once a day she takes a nap in my arms. I love it and so does she. I also think it helped her start on a good nap schedule because she sleeps the best in my arms and I have slowly weened her off of it and into her rock n' play.

She usually naps in her rock n' play, bouncer, car seat or in my arms and then sleeps at night in her DockATot. This thing is a must!! I think it helps her sleep SO much longer. It says on their website that is is completely breathable, but because we have an Owlet we feel good about her sleeping in it overnight. (review of the Owlet coming soon!). I like to have her nap in different places because it makes it easy for her to sleep wherever we are and during whatever we're doing.

I try to keep our nightly routine similar every night. We change her diaper, put on her owlet sock, put on her pjs, dim the lights in her room, put a heating pad in her bed with a blanket over it (best trick ever from my mother-in-law) and then I feed her. She is usually so tired after I feed her that I just lay her down in her now warm bed for the night, but occasionally I'll cuddle her and rock her after she eats and then lay her down. I think having he bed warm when I go to lay her down really helps her feel cozy.

If she wakes up in the night I try to wait 3-5 minutes to see if she will self soothe, but if she doesn't I always feed her. But then, I put her right back to bed after she eats. I don't let her cry it out, but I give her time to try to self soothe and as she gets older I will gradually lengthen that time.

Well that was kind of a lot of information and I probably forgot something haha but I hope it was helpful for someone!
